Clear valuations for insurance, inheritance, or loss
Do you need an official appraisal report, or are you simply curious about the value of your jewelry? As a certified appraiser, I offer both written and verbal valuations, tailored to your specific needs.
What is the purpose of the appraisal?
The valuation method depends on the purpose of the appraisal. The three most common situations are:
- For insurance coverage
- For inheritance or estate division
- For damage or loss assessment (expertise report)
Insurance Appraisal
If you own an unique piece of jewelry, a valuable watch, or a large collection, your insurance provider may require an official appraisal report. I will prepare a report that meets the standards of most insurance companies. In case of theft, fire, or other loss, the report serves as proof of ownership and value.
- Valuations are based on replacement value (new retail price).
- For antique or vintage pieces, I assess the cost to replace the item at a reputable antique jeweler or auctionhouse
Tip: Insurance reports are typically valid for two years, due to fluctuating gold and silver prices.
Appraisal for inheritance or estate division
In the case of inheritance or divorce, a fair division of jewelry and watches often requires a professional appraisal. I prepare a neutral and objective report based on the current market (liquidation) value — the estimated price in a direct sale.
- The report provides a clear basis for dividing assets among heirs or deciding on potential sale.
- I can also assist in preparing items for auction or act as an intermediary.
Tip: Even unwanted or unworn pieces can often be sold at auction with excellent results.
Damage or loss assessment report (Expertise Report)
Have you lost jewelry or watches but never had an appraisal report? A post-loss assessment report may help for insurance or documentation purposes. However, this type of report requires significant input from your side:
- Collect old receipts, invoices, certificates, or photos where you’re wearing the items.
- Based on this material and your descriptions, I will estimate the original value.
Please note: these reports are complex and assessed case by case.
Verbal appraisal
If you would like to know the value of your jewelry but don’t need an official report, I also offer verbal appraisals. During a personal consultation, I will carefully examine your items and give you an immediate estimate. You’re welcome to take notes during the session.
Tip: I can also advise you on where to sell your pieces or connect you with an auction house. If needed, I can mediate on your behalf.
What does the appraisal report include?
A full appraisal report includes:
- A detailed description of each piece
- Materials, techniques, size, weight, and any hallmarks, maker’s marks
- Gemstone analysis: measurements, carat weight, natural or synthetic, and any treatments
- Style and period
- Notes on condition, repairs or alterations
- Clear photographs of each item
You will receive the report in duplicate: one for your own records, and one for use with third parties (such as insurers or notaries).
How it works
- You can visit me by appointment (possible during weekends or in the evening), or I can come to you with my gemological equipment.
- For loss/damage cases, please collect as much supporting documentation as possible.
- Please note: I do not provide written appraisals based on photographs alone — a physical examination is essential.
