This story is a perfect example of how important it is to carefully consider whether altering an heirloom is truly the right decision.

The wish

An elderly lady came to me with a heartfelt request. She owned a ring and a pendant inherited from her mother and wanted to transform them into a pair of stud earrings. At home, she also had a brooch in a similar style. Her idea was to create a matching set she could wear with pride – a beautiful tribute to her family’s legacy.

Research

At first glance, the plan seemed entirely feasible. The ring and pendant looked similar in design – both set with rose-cut diamonds on foil in closed settings – but they were not identical. The sizes were different, and the construction varied. The pendant featured a central rose-cut diamond surrounded by smaller stones, while the ring had a slightly different arrangement. The yellow gold ring had likely already been altered in the past, possibly made from an old wedding band, and the pendant also appeared to be a repurposed piece.

Technical risks

The initial plan was to remove the pendant’s bail and melt down the ring’s band to create gold for the earring studs. Technically possible – but after a thorough inspection, it became clear that both pieces had previously been repaired using tin solder, a material notoriously difficult to remove from gold.

To attach new earring posts, a goldsmith would need to heat the gold. This process poses a significant risk: the foil beneath the diamonds could blacken due to the heat, giving the stones a dull, dark, or dirty appearance. While this could technically be restored – by removing the diamonds and resetting them on new foil – it’s highly specialized and costly work.

Conclusion

Sometimes leaving it as it is is the best choice. Adjusting heirlooms should always be done with great care and expertise. The emotional value is often priceless – and irreparable damage could lead to disappointment.

After an honest and thoughtful conversation, we decided not to proceed with the transformation. The risk of damaging the diamonds and compromising their original character was simply too great. Instead, we explored alternative ways she could wear or display the existing pieces without permanently altering them.

Want to know more?

Curious about whether your heirloom jewellery can or should be redesigned?
